Post Mortem
The game I created is Called “Weekend at Bernie’s” . It is an interactive storytelling game where you find out your boss is dead and you have to hide the truth for the weekend. The idea is based on an actual movie with the same title.
I knew that with the opportunity to do an interactive storytelling game, I wanted to make a game that was both funny but also messed up. I had a crazy concept for a game about adultery where you are cheating on your partner and you have to do everything in your power to prevent him/her from finding out. I believe that there would have been great potential with that story, but I didn’t go through with it because of the brainstorming, granted If i had properly used the game development pyramid at the time. Another Idea I had was to do a what if kind of game like what if iron man didn’t die, or what if Naruto could not save Sasuke.
Originally I was going to do a murder mystery but I found myself developing the story the time I was developing the game and I had no idea where the story would end, it didn’t feel right. I went with the Movie adaptation because of familiarity and because I was already aware of the premise, it was not any issue getting through the story to an extent. One of the hardest parts with developing this game was the level of content, and by that I mean dialogue. I say this because I already knew what I was going for, at that point I needed to make sure that I had the right words. It’s reminiscent of the scenario of knowing what you want to do but not knowing the steps taken to reach that goal.
I was really happy with the text and I felt that I was able to incorporate some sort of humour. I was also happy with how I was able to add some level of humour and suspense to the game.
to While I am satisfied with how it came out, I feel that I could have added a bit more content wise, there was a section of the game where it involved him joining a conga line, but I didn’t really know how I could have incorporated it into the game without getting the same results, so I eventually decided to scrap that.
As stated before this game was developed on twine, which is an open sourced website which can be used to create interactive stories. It was really easy to use, but I do feel like I could have done more because there is so much the website has to offer, like for example you could code a lives system, and looking back at it I think that adding something similar like a suspicion points system where if you get a very amount of points the people closest will contact the authorities. I feel that would be very beneficial to the game in terms of giving the player a sense of immersion.
Overall I am pretty satisfied with how the game turned out, I think there are a good amount of story pathways while still being able to be concise. I fell that as I continue to make games I will be able to spot out these problems earlier and deal with them more efficiently.
