Osu game Post Mortem
This assignment we were tasked with making a sound driven game, anything like piano tiles, or a game where you have to guess the sound, as long as the sound was a key factor to the game play. I decided that I was going to go with a rhythm based game, but there are many kinds of games of that type, like piano tiles, guitar hero, but the game I went with was Osu, which is a similar game. The way Osu is played is that you'll have button promos appearing and you have to make sure to click them on time in order to match the beat, failure to doing so will result in having you try again.
My Osu game was made on Microsoft Powerpoint where each button prompt is presented through a slide and takes you to the next once clicked, and the timing of the buttons are set in a way to match the beat when clicked.
While I am happy with how the game turned out , there are always things that could be improved upon. An example is the pacing/ timing in which when promos appear, I feel that they appeared pretty fast and the player might find it hard to click them on time to match the beat. I did pick a song that I was familiar with, so I had an idea of what the button was supposed to sound like when matching. I do see how this could be me not taking the players familiarity into consideration because I too was having a hard time creating each slide an every time I wanted to test a certain beat, I'd have to start from scratch and it was an extremely monotonous process.
I think the visuals are fine, but it’s easy to tell that everything was just piled together, and there wasn’t really any sense of uniform as in nothing really matched in terms of visuals, which gave off a fan computer game vibe.
In terms of the audio setup, it was fine I did give the button prompts a sound when clicked at. While it does match, its sound doesn’t really compliment the music, it isn’t jarring, but it is noticeable. I think that maybe adding actual audio that compliments the music, like drums, would give a better sense of immersion to the game.
Another aspect that I found to be a bit disappointed with, was the expansion of levels. Originally I had planned to do the game under a different level and track, but I chose to go with a different song because it was too fast. Looking back at it I wish that I had added a bonus level and had it act as an extremely hard difficulty.
I did like how the game was able to be played like the rhythm based game I aimed for. While the timing for the button prompts are not perfect, I’m really happy with how it still played out.
Despite everything, I am extremely pleased with how the game turned out and the fact that I was able to create it on PowerPoint. I hope people enjoy.
